How to upload files with Windows Drag'n'Drop; or Copy'n'Paste

Open a Windows Explorer (Not IExplorer) window and size it to a little under half a screen

Type this in the address window: ftp://login:passwd@yoursite.com/public_html

Where login and passwd are the ftp access codes for your website, yoursite is the name of the site to ftp to, and public_html (or httpdocs, or whatever) is the name of your root directory.

Explorer will then open the site with the root folder contents displayed like this:

Open another Windows Explorer (My Computer?) window with your files ready for uploading and size it to fit beside the FTP window.

TIP: Right/Click the TaskBar and choose "Tile Windows Horizontally".

Now you can Drag'n'Drop files from your own computer straight onto your website like this:

Select the file(s) to upload, Right/Click on them and drag them onto the ftp window. When you release the mouse button a window appears asking for your choice of action. You can choose Copy, or Move.

If you need to change a files permissions, Right/Click on the selected file icon and choose Properties

You can Allow or Deny, Read, Write and Execute permissions using the check boxes.

You can use these twin windows anytime to add, delete, move or copy files, just as though all the files were on your own hard drive.

Now, add a shortcut on your desktop, call it MySite(?), and point it at Explorer's FTP screen with this Target and Path: (Please NOTE: all on one line, with one space after .exe)
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe ftp://login:passwd@yoursite.com/public_html
Obviously if your Windows folder is in a different location,
you will need to show that location instead of C:\ (TIP: If you leave the path right out,
the Wizard will fill it in automatically.)

This works because Windows XP Explorer has a free FTP client built in, and this is how you take
advantage of that. Anytime you need to do an upload, just click your MySite shortcut icon.........

Of course, you might prefer a professional program that can remember all your sites, logins, etc and even do live edits with the built in HTML editor. Those are a very few of the capabilities of the CuteFTP program I have used for many years. Get it HERE: CuteFTP
